8 character intelligent LED dot matrix display with integrated user interface

The DSP004 is an 8-character alphanumeric LED dot matrix display module featuring double-sided PCB construction and red 5x7 LiteOn LED matrices. Each character measures 0.5 x 0.7 inches, with an 8-character display window of 0.95 x 5.1 inches, and an overall board dimension of 6.0 x 2.6 inches. The unit weighs 2.1 ounces.

Powered by +5VDC, the board includes built-in protection against overvoltage, reverse polarity, and ESD. LED indicators show power and protection status. Communication is via +5V TTL/UART signals. Useful for panel instrumentation, educational products, clocks, lab equipment, and industrial controls.

A built-in menu configuration interface allows users to adjust baud rate, EOL terminator, and default scroll speeds and brightness without writing code. Menu can be accessed through USB using freeware serial terminal emulator software and a +5V TTL/UART VCP adapter. Direct configuration programming to on-board EEPROM allows bypassing menu programming.

Smarti™ suite of ASCII flow control characters ensures reliable display of scrolling messages of up to 40 characters in length and provides brightness and scroll speed assignment with individual message granularity. Auto-scroll permits repetitive display of standby messaging in background mode. Software reset allows instant interruption for urgent messaging.

The display includes an ambient light sensor for automatic brightness control and supports external PWM input.

Designed for panel mounting, the unit ships with a bezel, lens, and mounting hardware. Documentation and template files are available for panel design and installation. RoHS, FCC and CAN ICES-3(B) compliant. Assembled for enhanced reliability in accordance with IPC-A-610E Class 2, on rugged .062in thick PCB. Includes 1-year limited warranty and 30-day refund policy.

How do I get started once I have one?

1. Download and read our QSG to get familiar with the process. Section 2 of our QSG is an instructional section on Virtual Com Ports for those unfamiliar with this technology.

 2. Install freeware Serial Terminal Emulator such as YAT (for Windows, recommended) or WCHSerialPort (for MacOS, recommended).

Follow our QSG instructions for easy setup and connections.

3.  Plug in your +5V TTL/UART VCP USB adapter into your PC and connect to your display.

4.  Once up and running on the emulator, you can configure the device settings so it will work for your installation. You can test printing messages with the emulator and even make custom characters with the user interface.

5. Once the display configuration is finalized, disconnect device from emulator and connect the unit to an MCU or Arduino and write messages using Smarti™ ASCII control codes. You may download our Arduino demonstration sketch and connection diagram here:
